Being Transgender is not a mental disorder anymore
We are very excited to inform you that World Health Organization (WHO) recognized that being trans is not a mental disorder anymore. The International Classification of Diseases (ICD) is the document which is used as the base for classification of diseases globally. According to WHO it is a standart diognostic tool for epidemics, healthcare management and clinical purposes. The objects of classification are the types of diseases which all together classify into categories, groups and subgroups. It is published by the World Health Organization and it is reviewed every 10 years. Today the 10th revision of International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) is being used. WHO presented the ICD-11 on June 18th, which does not include trans identity as a mental health disorder. This is a moment of pride and joy for the global trans community. This is the end of the shameful, stigmatizing and discriminatory era, and it is the beginning of a new, free and just era. This is the small victory on which more diverse and open society shall be built. We are hopeful that these changes will be done in Armenia soon too. ICD-11 will be presented at the World Health Assembly in May 2019 to Member States, and will come into effect as of 1st January 2022. We urge our Government to not wait until 2022, and start to improve the lives of Armenian trans citizens by implementing the necessary changes now.
